Cu Brei Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Holostratotype. The South Cu Brei section, exposed in a NE - SW band on the southeastern margin of Cu Brei Mountain, Yaly Commune, Sa Thay District, Kon Tum Province (E = 14°16’25”, E = 107°39’45”; (Deo Go sheet, D-48-72-A of the 1: 50 000 map). Hypostratotype: The section in NW - SE direction, northwest of the Cu Brei Mountain margin (E = 14°17’40”; E = 107°39’ 15”). The Cu Brei Fm was first described by Than Due Duyen (2003) consisting of terrigenous- carbonate sediments, with distribution only known in the Cu Brei Mountain area, Yaly Commune, Sa Thay District, Kon Tum Province.
Synonym:
Lithology and Thickness
Sandstone, gritstone, limestone: Lower part with a 176 m thickness, consists of terrigenous sediments. Upper part consists of terrigenous and intercalated carbonate sediments (33 m thick). Total thickness of the South Cu Brei Section is 209 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The basal conglomerate of the Cu Brei Fm rests unconformably on the biotitc-hornblende granitoid Dien Binh Complex Fm (dated as ca. 400 +/- 20 Ma by K/Ar methods).
Upper contact
In its distribution area the Cu Brei Fm is covered by Quaternary sediments. Next younger regional units are the volcanics of the Permian Dak Lin Fm and Triassic Chu Prong Fm and Mang Yang Fm.
Regional extent
In its distribution area the Cu Brei Fm occurs along a small streambed in a narrow band of 6 km length, 3 km width in a synclinal structure with the northwest - southeast axis, and 40 - 70° on the inclined flank. The formation is divided by latitudinal and meridianal fault systems into two exposed areas - the North and the South Cu Brei areas. The sequence of each area is presented below. At present the formation has only been observed in a small area of Kon Turn Province, but it is possible that a wider distribution of the Cu Brei Fm will be found in the Kon Tum terrane.
